The Dilemma of Ethics

Ethics is formally defined as moral principles that govern individual or group behavior.  These principles are based on shared, or commonly held beliefs of right and wrong conduct.

A dilemma based on ethics is actually the choice between two morally sound, “good” solutions, but is often misunderstood as moral choice – that is, right vs. wrong.

If we are not in agreement  - that is, don’t have commonly held beliefs of right and wrong conduct, we are unlikely to be able to solve the ethical dilemmas that are not clearly spelled out.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals has a well-developed Donor Code of Ethics, covering key ethical considerations in working with donors.

Then what’s left?

A broad category of ethical, and perhaps moral considerations in the workplace, in program delivery and in how we represent our organization to our community.

It’s a lot to leave undefined, and a dilemma for our profession.
